LES AND BUDDY

Greg Champion

In 2001 at a songwriting retreat camp at Nardoo Station near Cunnamulla, indigenous woman Ruby Nixon told Greg a tale as if it were true and really happened. Ruby said that local long-retired rodeo champion Les went to watch the annual rodeo. While leaning on the rails taking in the action he sensed someone next to him. When he looked..…it was his fellow champion rodeo rider of old, Buddy…..deceased for twenty years! Despite his shock, the visitor said don’t worry, I’ve only come to say hello. They then spoke about early rodeo days, until the visitor said it’s time for me to be going. The song Les and Buddy was written then.

Greg Champion – Champs – has seen 28 Tamworth Festivals since his first in 1991. Along the way he’s picked up a few gongs such as two TSA awards, one Golden Guitar, two ARIA nominations, some Victorian Country Music awards and Hands of Fame. Champs’s best-known songs include May Your Fridge be Full of Coldies, I Made a Hundred in the Backyard at Mum’s, collaboration with Jim Haynes and Ted Egan on Don’t Call Wagga Wagga Wagga, and the album that’s outsold all his other forty-plus albums put together, by double: Aussie Xmas with Bucko & Champs.
