Laurence Turner: 'Jazz Hopscotch with the Miles Davis Quintet'

The sleeves of Jazz records are wonderful resources for discovering new music.
The list of personnel is so much more than a roll call; each name is a gateway to further music, further combinations of creative voices. A collection of gateways to other musical worlds.
To continue with the ongoing theme of my shows, how accessible discovering new music can be, this show is an exploration of how the sleeves of Jazz records can be used to hop between biographies, styles and time periods.

Focusing on the First Great Quintet, we leap from the legendary Prestige Recordings ('Workin' with...','Cookin' with...','Relaxin' with...' and 'Steamin' with...') to hear Miles play with Cannonball Aderly, hear Red Garland and John Coltrane in the role of band leader and hear other records where Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones provided the rhythm.

Thank you for listening.
